Our verdict

The safe choice in this selection: nine years in business (Barcelona, 2017), 4.7/5 on Trustpilot with nearly 1,400 reviews, and a real editing product built around raw transcription. But our position remains unchanged: for simple text, local Whisper is free and sufficient. You buy HappyScribe for editing, subtitles, and volume, not for the transcription itself.

What exactly is it?

HappyScribe is an automatic transcription service founded in Barcelona in 2017: you upload an audio or video file, and it comes back as time-stamped text or subtitles in the online editor. The AI layer is complemented by a human proofreading option from native linguists, for use cases where accuracy is contractual.

The difference from a raw engine like Whisper is not speech recognition—it has become a commodity—but everything around it: an editor with synchronized playback, subtitle styles, translation, glossaries, export in every format, and team management.

Our test: local Whisper, timed on the same type of audio

Rather than paraphrasing the marketing page, we measured what the free local alternative actually delivers—since it is the real competitor. Test machine: Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX (24 threads, int8), without a GPU — deliberately, to measure the worst case. Transcription via faster-whisper of 148 seconds of French audio:

ConfigurationMeasured time (26/08/2026)Real-time factor
Whisper small (local, CPU only)19.9 s for 148 s of audio0.13 (7× faster than audio)
Whisper large-v3 (local, CPU only)89.7 s for 148 s of audio0.61 (1.6× faster than audio)

The result surprised even us: even without a GPU, even at maximum quality (large-v3), local Whisper transcribes faster than real time. One hour of interviews takes ~37 minutes to process on a basic modern CPU—and a few minutes on a GPU. Raw transcription is therefore a solved, free problem: to be clear, if your needs stop at the text, buy nothing.

So why 4.5/5 for HappyScribe? Because raw transcription isn't the product. The product is what Whisper will never do alone: the synchronized playback editor for making corrections in minutes, aligned and styled subtitles with SRT/VTT exports, translation, contractual human proofreading, and team management. In our sample, recognition from both Whisper sizes is clean—the difference comes down to proper names and punctuation, in favor of large-v3 — but the file comes out raw, with no usable timestamps or correction tool. This is the last mile you're paying for.

Pricing

HappyScribe charges by audio hour or monthly subscription depending on volume, with a free trial tier. Human proofreading is billed separately at a significantly higher rate than AI alone — that's normal; linguists are involved. Roughly speaking, AI alone costs a few euros per hour of audio; check the current pricing, as it changes.

Strengths and caveats

Strengths
  • The best reputation in our selection: 4.7/5 on Trustpilot, ~1,400 reviews, zero signs of questionable practices
  • European company (Barcelona, RGPD) established since 2017—not a startup that could disappear with your subscriptions
  • The subtitle editor and exports (SRT, VTT, styles): what Whisper alone will never do
  • Optional human review for use cases where errors are costly
Caveats
  • Pay-per-use where local Whisper is free — for occasional plain text, the subscription isn't justified
  • Your files pass through their servers: for confidential recordings (medical, legal), local remains the rule

Frequently asked questions

Is HappyScribe better than Whisper?

For raw speech recognition, the gap has closed: local Whisper large-v3 produces very high-quality French transcription for free. HappyScribe wins on everything else: guaranteed server-side speed, a synchronized editor, timed and styled subtitles, translation, human proofreading, and team management. Buy the tooling, not the engine.

Is local transcription with Whisper really free?

Yes—the model is open source and runs on your machine, including offline. The real cost is compute time: on CPU, the best quality (large-v3) can take longer than the audio; on GPU, it runs well below the audio duration. Our dedicated guide covers installation in ten minutes.

Can I send confidential recordings to HappyScribe?

The company is European and subject to the GDPR, which is better than most American alternatives. But our editorial rule does not change: a medical, legal, or NDA-covered recording should not pass through any third-party server—local Whisper exists precisely for that.

How valuable is human proofreading?

This is the option that sets the service apart from raw engines: native linguists correct the AI transcription, with a contractual accuracy rate. Useful for official deliverables (minutes, broadcast subtitling); unnecessary for internal use.
