What is it, exactly?
HappyScribe is an automatic transcription service founded in Barcelona in 2017: drop in an audio or video file, get back timestamped text or subtitles in a browser editor. An optional human-proofreading layer, done by native-speaking linguists, covers the use cases where accuracy is contractual.
The gap between HappyScribe and a raw engine like Whisper isn’t speech recognition anymore — that’s become close to a commodity. What we tested: local Whisper, timed on comparable audio
Rather than paraphrase the marketing page, we measured what the free local alternative actually delivers — because that’s HappyScribe’s real competitor. Test machine: an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, CPU only, no GPU — deliberately, to measure the worst case. Transcribing a 147.8-second English recording with faster-whisper, measured August 26, 2026:

The result surprised us too: even with no GPU, even at maximum quality (large-v3), local Whisper transcribes faster than real time. An hour of interview comes back in about 37 minutes of CPU-only compute — a few minutes on a GPU. Raw transcription is a solved, free problem. If that’s genuinely all you need, don’t pay for it.
So why does HappyScribe still score 4.5/5 here? Because raw transcription was never the product. What Whisper alone will never give you is what HappyScribe actually sells: a synchronized editor to clean up a transcript in minutes, styled and timed subtitles with SRT/VTT export, translation, contractual human proofreading, team accounts. On our sample, both Whisper sizes came back clean — the gap shows up on proper nouns and punctuation, in large-v3’s favor — but the file lands as flat, unstyled text with no editing tools around it. That surrounding layer is the last mile you’re actually paying for.

HappyScribe runs tiered monthly plans by AI minutes: Basic at $17/month for 120 minutes, Pro at $29/month for 600 minutes, Business at $89/month for 6,000 minutes — roughly half those prices on annual billing. Extra AI minutes beyond your plan run $0.20/minute. Human proofreading is billed separately at $2.00/minute — call it about $120 for one hour of audio, which is fair: that’s a linguist’s time, not a server’s.
